A concrete slab foundation is the most common type used for barndominiums. It provides a sturdy and level base for the structure. We provide guidelines for foundation preparation in our kit instructions.
PRO
- Construction time and costs
- Due to the simplicity of our designs and the nature of construction, barndominiums are more timely and cost-effective than traditional home.
- Maintenance and durability
- Metal exteriors require significantly less maintenance and can withstand harsh weather conditions.
- Dual-purpose living/work space options.
- Many customers choose to incorporate large outdoor living, work and/or storage spaces into their designs, eliminating the need for multiple outbuildings.
- Lots of extra space
- Our open floor plans offer spacious living areas and ample storage.
CONS
- Building regulations and zoning
- Building regulations and zoning requirements for barndominiums vary depending on the area. Some regions may have restrictions on their use as primary residences or may require special permits.
- No perks
- You do not have the perks you would see in a typical community with HOA requirements.
- Resale value and Market Perception
- Barndominiums are gaining popularity but may still be relatively niche in some real estate markets.

How long it will take to build a Barndo will depend on the size, complexity and customizations involved. Normally, a simple one can take up to 6 months.
- Low Maintenance
- Among the most appealing aspects of metal siding is its little upkeep compared to the other types of materials. Vinyl siding, for example, frequently necessitates yearly power washing and, in some instances, the use of cleaning solutions to erase blemishes and other defects. Wood siding requires regular staining and treatment to protect it from pests and the elements. Similarly, stucco may need repainting and filling to fix cracks and holes.
- Metal’s maintenance needs are far less extensive. The homeowner can usually get through with only a brief yearly check. The only regular maintenance a metal wall needs is cleaning and inspection. Metal somehow doesn’t support mold or fungal development; neither does it absorb nor hold moisture, so there’s no need to be concerned about these difficulties. Because the material is so resistant to a wide range of dangers, these inspections often don’t find many issues, making them fast and easy. Cleaning metal is similarly easy, as its nonporous surface makes it easy to remove buildup.
- Metal roof panels require minimal maintenance. They are resistant to cracking, warping, and rotting, which are common issues with traditional roofing materials. Periodic inspections and simple cleaning are usually sufficient to keep a metal roof in good condition. If repairs are needed, individual panels can be easily replaced. Traditional roofing materials often require more frequent maintenance. Shingles can become loose or damaged over time, requiring regular inspections and repairs. These repairs can be more complex and may involve replacing entire sections of the roof.
- Long lasting durability and 40 year warranty
- Metal siding is among the most resilient siding options on the market, exceeding vinyl and many other siding options in various ways. Metal siding, in truth, can survive almost every adverse weather, including hail storms, severe rain orsnowstorm, fire, and strong wind breezes. Metal siding offers more toughness and strength than conventional siding materials, resulting in a far longer lifespan. It may withstand corrosion for years if correctly coated with finishes. Unlike other materials with greater combustibility, a well-sealed commercial office or warehouses with metal siding can be fire-resistant. Steel and other metals are also remarkably resistant to environmental hazards, making them more appealing for commercial projects. Metal walls are non flammable, don’t warp in changing humidity, don’t rot, and are resistant to mold and mildew. Similarly, rodents, insects and other infestations aren’t an issue. As the threats of climate change have become increasingly prominent, this durability has become a more important advantage.
- Metal roof panels are incredibly durable and long-lasting. They can withstand harsh weather conditions like heavy rain, strong winds, and hailstorms. They are also resistant to fire, rot, and damage from insects. With proper maintenance, metal roof panels can easily last for 50 years or even more. Traditional roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles or wood shakes, have a shorter lifespan compared to metal roof panels. While they offer decent protection, they are more prone to wear and tear caused by weather elements. Typically, traditional roofing materials last around 20 to 30 years before needing replacement.
- Energy efficient
- Metal panel siding may operate within the confines of your building’s envelope to improve efficiency. If properly installed by your building team, it can result in an extremely airtight solution. Metal siding provides excellent energy-efficiency characteristics. Today, metal siding is frequently covered with great technology, which reflects the sun’s heat transfer away from home. This helps to keep indoor thermal comfort stable, especially in the summer. When metal siding is installed over a strong insulation layer, your home is much more resistant to air intrusion. These energy-saving features lessen the burden on your HVAC system, leading to lower monthly energy expenditures.
- Environmental Impact
- Metal roof panels are considered environmentally friendly for several reasons. Firstly, they often contain recycled materials and can be recycled themselves at the end of their lifespan. Secondly, metal roofs can be installed over existing roofs, reducing the need for disposal of old roofing materials. Lastly, metal roofs are energy-efficient, reducing the overall carbon footprint of your home.
- Modern design
- Although the major reasons for utilizing metal siding in a building are economical, there are also artistic advantages to consider. Metal siding may radically alter the overall appearance, making it more attractive and creating market value. Metal siding may be found in a variety of forms and finishes. It can provide a variety of aesthetics, such as color possibilities, elegant stainless steel, and rustic metal looks. It should come as no surprise that metal siding can update any property. Metal siding is trendy and is here to stay, with a multitude of colors and finishes to pick from, as well as the flexibility to choose a panel pattern that meets your visual identity.
- Prefabrication
- Steel siding is easy to prefabricate and is relatively light for its strength. The possibility of prefabrication and lower weight mean it takes less time and effort to install, which has become increasingly important amid today’s high demands.
A Barndo can last for years if it is well built and constructed. But it will also depend on the environment, materials and maintenance. You may need to repair doors, windows or other parts of the house after some years.
