Barndominium Construction
Knowing the construction materials used can guide you towards a well-informed decision that can take you closer to your ideal barndominium design.
Monolithic slab foundation
A monolithic slab foundation is created by pouring a single layer of concrete to form a slab and footing. It is typically 4-6 inches thick, and serves as both the floor and foundation of a building. It is commonly used in areas with shallow soil frost depths since it is more durable and efficient. A monolithic slab foundation is around 12 to 18 inches thick at the footing and 4 to 6 thick for the slab. Concrete reinforcement using rebar and proper site preparation is required in order to construct a monolithic foundation.
Some of the advantages of monolithic slab:
- Quick and easy construction. This foundation can dry faster than other types of foundation.
- Strong foundation. This foundation can be very strong if correctly installed and with the right anchor bolts.
- Low maintenance. This foundation only requires a scheduled inspection to ensure that there are no cracks in the foundation.
Scissors truss
Scissors trusses support a pitched roof with a sloped or raised ceiling surface. The bottom chords of scissors trusses cross over each other, connecting it to the bent top chords at an intermediate point along their length. This makes them appear like a pair of open scissors. A unique and beautiful ceiling style is often created using the scissors truss.
Some of the advantages of a scissors truss:
- Inexpensive and easy to install. Scissors trusses don’t need other support elements or specialized installation.
- Easy to maintain. Maintenance is easier for scissors trusses because they have fewer structural components.
- Can be customized. They can be customized to create a roof configuration that perfectly matches your building project.
